listen up, mainers.

I’m interrupting this lazy silence to bring you a very important message!  As many of you know, I’m sort of a politically vocal chick.  I’m mainly liberal, but I really don’t like to force feed my views to others much.  And I get really upset when others force their views on me.  So, I’ve gotten my panties in a twist over the first proposition on Maine’s ballot this year.  It’s the proposition to strike the newborn right of gay and lesbian residents of the state of Maine to get legally married.

Opponents of gay marriage are almost always very religious.  I’m not saying that all religious people (and I have many many God-loving friends) are intolerant of others, but unfortunately there are many who like to use the Bible as a weapon.  Leviticus and Romans are thrown around non-stop.  “Gay sex is an abomination,” they say, conveniently leaving out the rest of Leviticus that clearly states the same for the sins of eating lobster and three-day-old leftovers.  “Marriage is a religious union before God,” they say, but I was allowed to get married, and I’m an atheist.  Shouldn’t I have just been permitted a civil union by that definition?  “Marriage is strictly for procreation,” they say, but what about those who can’t physically procreate?  Should their rights be dissolved, too?  And what about artificial insemination?  If the biological parent passes away while the child is a minor, shouldn’t the remaining partner (and only other parent the child has ever known and loved) be awarded custody?

Lies are being spread through the airwaves like diseases.  Lies about school curriculums being changed to include explicit gay sex explanations, gay couples adopting unsuspecting children and systematically recruiting them, pastors being legally obligated to perform gay marriage ceremonies, etc.  More than a little disheartening.

What’s worse, supporters of marriage equality are MUCH less likely to get out and vote.  So if you’re a Maine resident, please, please, please get out there and join the fight.  You can vote early, too.  As early as tomorrow.  Just walk into your town office and ask for a ballot.  And vote No on 1.

  1. maybe it’s the pms, or it could be the combo of the moving music coupled with a beautifully and eloquently written opinion of the state of affairs. maybe it is that i am currently incredibly sad at the impending loss of a long-standing friendship over this matter… whatever the reason, i just wanna go out and get a rainbow flag and wrap it around my body like a toga while running down the main streets of damariscotta yelling, “this is not okay!”.
    nicely said, my friend.

  2. Good for you!!!

-from a God loving, brain using, liberal leaning, but conservative feeling voter who thinks everyone should be able to be legally tied to whomever they LOVE!

  3. Go Maine, Go Gays, but mostly, go lip balm! These lip balms are ba-nanas!

  4. Thank you! And very well put. I may not be in Maine, but I whole-heartedly agree.
Love the music (first time I’ve had the speakers on while reading your blog :)
